Inactive Handicap
There may be some confusion over this change to the handicapping system (full details are posted on the competition notice board). This change has been introduced by the Council of National Golf Unions for 2010 and applies to all golf clubs.
Players are now required to play in at least 3 qualifying competitions during a calendar year to retain an active handicap. Players who did not do so in 2009 will now have a handicap designated inactive. They may continue to use this handicap for friendly golf and for the majority of club competitions. For certain major competitions, an active handicap will be a condition of entry. A list of these competitions will be posted. When a player with an inactive handicap plays in a competition, his handicap will be adjusted as normal, according to his score, and he will be fully entitled to win prizes. After playing in 3 qualifying competitions, the handicap will then become active and the player will then be able to enter all competitions. (No return scores are acceptable for this purpose but must have at least 13 holes with a completed score).
There is also a facility for returning supplementary scores, outside competitions to render or maintain a handicap as active. This will not start to operate before April and details of how this will operate will be posted on the notice board.
Other clubs may well require an active handicap for entry into Open competitions and players intending to enter Open events should bear this in mind.
